Howlite beads are cut from a naturally white form of calcium silicoborate that often features a dark gray or black spider-web matrix. Sometimes called albino turquoise, white jasper, or white turquoise, naturally white howlite is perfect for creating inexpensive semiprecious beads and donut pendants. Because it is soft and porous, this gemstone is sometimes dyed different colors to imitate pricier stones, such as turquoise and lapis lazuli.
Howlite is named after mineralogist Henry How, who discovered the gem in Nova Scotia during the 19th century. Howlite is known as the stone of memory, knowledge and progress, and is said to encourage reasoning, observation, discernment, patience, and tact. It also is believed to eliminate pain, stress and anger, as well as aid in the absorption of calcium. Keep howlite beads and jewelry components away from acids, solvents, and prolonged exposure to strong light.
