Silver Filled Beads and Jewelry Supplies

Silver filled beads and jewelry findings are a perfect alternative to pricier solid sterling silver components, especially when sterling prices spike. Not always available.

Silver filled beads and jewelry findings are a perfect alternative to pricier solid sterling silver components, especially when sterling prices spike. They're made by using heat and pressure to apply a thick layer of 925 silver (or 999 fine silver) to a base of less costly metal. This produces a surface of sterling silver (or fine silver) that is hundreds of times thicker than a silver plating, and is unlikely to wear off in a lifetime. Our silver filled beads and findings are 1/10 silver filled, meaning that 1/10th of the entire component is silver.

2021/2022 update: Currently, labor issues are causing many manufacturers to suspend the production of silver-filled wire, because when you combine the price of silver, with the labor to make silver-filled items, the cost isn't always worth it -- sometimes the sterling silver item is so close in price that you might as well just use sterling silver instead. We will continue to carry silver-filled items when they are available and their price compares favorably to sterling silver.

Our precious metal wire is sold by the troy ounce (ozt). The number of feet per ozt varies depending on wire gauge (thickness). Click into a product's details to see the feet per ozt for that gauge.

  • Basic Loops The loop size will depend on how much wire you leave past the end of your beads, and around which part of your pliers you bend the loop. A good loop size is usually about 1/3 of the way from the tip of your pliers, with about 8mm of wire. Use round needle-nose pliers. If using an eye pin, decide which way you want the loop to go - the same direction as the premade loop on the other end, or 90º off. Keep this direction in mind as you bend the rest of the wire. Cut off any excess wire (we suggest retaining 8mm above the top of your beads). Grip the pin just above the top bead (at the arrow above), and bend the wire sharply toward you. Grasp the tip of the wire with pliers, and bend smoothly away from you, around the pliers. Wrapped Loops Use chain-nose pliers to grasp the wire just above the top of the bead. Use your fingers to bend the wire sharply over the top of the pliers, at a 90° angle. You should have 2-3mm of straight wire between the bead and the bend. Use round-nose pliers to grasp a spot just above the bend, and use your fingers to smoothly bend the wire all the way around the tip of the pliers. Now use pliers to grasp the wire firmly across the loop. Use your fingers or chain-nose pliers to carefully wrap the wire around the stem. For best control, experts recommend you break this step into a series of half wraps. Trim excess with flush cutters. • These bar and ring sets can be clasped with one hand making them ideal for bracelets and watches. Please note: The last few beads you put near the clasp should be small, to make sure the bar will go all the way through the ring (making the clasp easier to close). Size listed is outside diameter of the ring (excluding its loop) and the length of the bar. Price is per set, rather than per piece. Toggle Clasps and Bracelets It's true! Toggles can be clasped with one hand, so they are good for bracelets, including watch bracelets. Here's a hint to help make sure no one loses one of your creations: When using toggle clasps for bracelets, the bracelet must fit the customer fairly well. If the bracelet is too loose, a short toggle bar might wiggle itself out of its loop. Longer bars can help solve the problem, but won't eliminate it. To size your bracelets to your customers' wrists you might want to use a few chain links at the end, between the clasp and the last beads. Then you can remove or add links at the time of sale. Or if you really have a good thing going, make 6.5", 7", and 8" versions of your best-selling patterns and colors of bracelets.
