Vulcanite and Vinyl Heishi Beads

Shop colorful African vinyl heishi beads, for fun accents and color blocks. Fast shipping, wholesale price options, plus free jewelry projects from Rings & Things.

Our selection of colorful "sequin" style African heishi beads work great in stretch bracelets and other colorful jewelry! While these beads look like miniature phonograph records, they're not made from actual record albums. Originally, this bead style was made from vulcanite (vulcanized hard rubber), but testing has shown that some are made from other materials as well, including vinyl. Our selection includes both vulcanite heishi and vinyl heishi -- but they weren't made from record albums. These beads were most likely made in Europe and exported to West Africa for trade.

In addition to strung designs, these colorful heishi beads make great washers for riveted jewelry. 3 of our favorite projects with these heishi are the Pulse Earrings (riveted on metal), Sacred Curling Stone Bracelet (simply strung on StretchMagic), and Tschinkel's Circles Bracelet (riveted on leather).

  • These heishi strands look great worn as-is, and they are also excellent for use as protective washers in riveted jewelry. There are about 1,000 inexpensive beads per strand, and it's easy to punch a larger hole with any jewelry tool designed for punching holes in metal. Then stack the colors and sizes for use as ornamental rivet accents, or use them on the back of a leather bracelet, to help hold a small rivet securely in place. We carry an eclectic selection of African beads, both old trade beads, and newer beads made or strung in Africa for the world-wide bead trade. Trade beads are old and/or used beads, and will show varying amounts of wear. Newly-made African beads are generally handmade in small communities. Style and availability vary.
