Description
African Opal Gemstone Beads: Opal beads have the same chemical composition as quartz, but contain up to 13% water. Because of this, opal jewelry components should be protected from heat and strong light. Loss of water can cause opals to crack and/or lose iridescence. African opal beads can be oiled to prevent dehydration. Make sure to keep your opal beads away from detergents, ultrasonic cleaners, metal polish, acids and strong solvents.
African opal beads come in several pretty shades, including shades of black, gray and white, resembling marble or finely polished granite. They sometimes display black or brown dendrites (fern-like inclusions). These semiprecious beads are common opal and do not include the color "flashes" that precious opal is known for -- nevertheless, they provide eye-catching gradations and patterns, and they are a nice neutral option for October birthstone jewelry.
