Our green jade pendants are carved from a type of serpentine. Semiprecious serpentine gemstones are translucent, waxy silicates of magnesium which often come in shades of green and have historically been confused with types of jade. Serpentine, however, is softer and less dense than most real jade. Serpentine is said to restore self-confidence, dispel fear, and enhance meditation. Types of serpentine, including green jade, are also thought to help balance female hormones and increase milk production in nursing mothers. Tigereye Beads come in richly chatoyant browns and yellows with a golden luster. While legends exist of Roman soldiers wearing this "all seeing" stone for protection in battle, tigereye was not considered a semiprecious gemstone until the late 19th century. Today, tigereye beads are some of our gemstone best sellers! The stone is also known as African cat's eye, crocidolite, and tiger's eye, and was once even called griqualandite, named after Griqualand West in Africa, where the finest examples of the stone were mined.Protect tigereye jewelry components from scratches, sharp blows, and large temperature changes. Because of their chatoyance, tigereye beads and pendants should not be cleaned with alcohol or abrasives. It can be helpful to treat the stone with oils like Goo Gone. African Jade Beads: The name African jade is used to describe an opaque grossular garnet that comes from South African mines, and resembles jade. Also known as buddstone, garnet jade, and Transvaal jade, these semiprecious beads often contain a mix of light green, pink and white. The form of grossular garnet they're cut from is a silicate of calcium and aluminum that's used as an inexpensive substitute for jade. The term "grossular" comes from the Latin word for "gooseberry," a reflection on the stone's green color. The name Lapis Lazuli comes from the Latin word for "stone" (lapis) and the Arabian word for "blue" (azul). True to their name, these semiprecious beads offer naturally blue shades with inclusions that twinkle like stars in the tales of the Arabian Nights. Lapis lazuli was one of the first gemstones ever to be worn as jewelry (a busy lapis trade is thought to have existed as early as 4000 B.C.). Lapis lazuli is believed to be a stone of truth and friendship, and has been a popular birthstone for Libra and September birthdates throughout the centuries. It is reputed to bring harmony to relationships, cleanse the mental body, and release old karmic patterns. See related items below.
