The name Lapis Lazuli comes from the Latin word for "stone" (lapis) and the Arabian word for "blue" (azul). True to their name, these semiprecious beads offer naturally blue shades with inclusions that twinkle like stars in the tales of the Arabian Nights. One of only a few rocks used as a semiprecious gemstone, lapis lazuli contains grains of several blue minerals, including lazurite and sodalite. BC jade beads are a beautiful, mossy, medium-green color. The "B.C." stands for British Columbia, which is where real BC jade (a true nephrite jade) is mined. Stock that we know to be actual British Columbian nephrite jade, we have labeled with a "C" (for Canada) at the end of the stock number. More often, we have "BC Style Jade" -- these are more likely to be "new jade" (a serpentine), dyed "white jade", and sometimes they may even be "Taiwan jade" (another true nephrite jade, just not from BC). Bronzite is part of the pyroxene group. Bronzite is a hypersthene, and is more properly called enstatite, or when it has more iron, ferrosilite. This form of pyroxene is chemically "weathered" resulting in an opaque stone with a submetallic luster, especially on its cleavage surfaces. Weathering on the hypersthene occurs due to moisture and temperature conditions within the igneous rock, metamorphic rock or meteorite where the stone is found. Bronzite often contains inclusions of highly reflective minerals, such as hematite and goethite, which enhance the beautiful bronze-like effect when polished (hence its name).
