Spinel forms in a wide variety of colors: black, blue, red, violet, green, brown, pink, white and colorless, and is most famous for its brilliant red variety that closely resembles ruby. Spinel was named in 1779 by Jean Demeste from the latin "spinella", or little thorn, due to its sharp octahedral crystals. In ancient times, exceptional large spinel crystals were mined in Southeast Asia, frequently becoming the treasured property of kings and emperors. In the United States, Spinel was recently added as an August birthstone, sharing this month with peridot and sardonyx. Amazonite (sometimes called Amazon stone) is a rare blue-green variety of microcline (a feldspar mineral) used as a semiprecious stone. Its brilliant color was once thought to be caused by copper, but now is attributed to the presence of lead or possibly iron. Amazonite is an opaque stone, often found with white, yellow or gray inclusions and a silky luster or silvery sheen. Even when polished, amazonite beads maintain a somewhat raw, natural texture that makes this pale blue-green stone even more appealing to many people. Please see the Related Products links below for similar items, and more information about this stone. Garnets are named after punica granatum (pomegranate), due to garnet's resemblance to pomegranate seeds. Garnets come in a variety of shades, but generally when you hear the word "Garnet" you think of this deep rich red. Garnet is actually a group of closely related isomorphic minerals which can even intergrow within one crystal! Garnet is the most popular and well-known birthstone for January. Yellow Opal gemstone beads have the same basic chemical composition as quartz, but usually contains 6 - 10% water. Common Opal (sometimes called opalite) does not have the flashes of light found in precious opal, but both common opal and precious opal are hydrated amorphous Silicon Dioxide. Our pretty Yellow Opal is somewhere in between: It is more translucent than most common opal, and has hints of opal fire (or maybe that's just flashes from the faceting)!
