Glue Tips Which Glue is Best? Super glues (cyanoacrylate glues) are best for surfaces that fit exactly together (no gaps), or where you need just a small dab for extra security. Two-part epoxies require mixing, but have excellent long-term durability (even for foil-back crystals). Great for production craftspeople! Specialty & craft glues are each designed for specific applications. Some are flexible, and many will bond plastics, foil-back crystal, porous materials (wood, fabric, etc.), or metal-to-metal bonds. Resins and sealants can sometimes also be used as adhesives. Shop All our Adhesives and Glues Gluing Hints & Tips Follow the manufacturer's directions. Test a small sample and allow it to cure thoroughly before proceeding. When possible, use a file to roughen smooth surfaces. This allows for a stronger grip. Clean both surfaces before applying adhesive (we recommend isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab). Work in a well-ventilated, dry, and dust-free environment. Extreme temperatures might affect drying time. Store all adhesives in a cool place. MSDS (Material Safety and Data Sheets) are available upon request. Glues & Cold Temperatures Avoid shipping glues via Ground during winter months, since many will lose effectiveness once frozen. This is especially true of super glues. Store finished creations in a location that maintains temperatures above freezing. To intentionally weaken a super glue bond, place glued object in a household freezer for several hours. (Epoxy glues also become brittle in low temperatures, but most will not snap apart as super glues do). Remember Murphy's Law! Before oxidizing, antiquing or otherwise applying any chemical to every piece of your best customer's 1,000-piece order, we strongly recommend that you test the chemical(s) on a small sample of the goods. Oxidizing Tips Always work in a well-ventilated area. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Make sure your metal is clean, dry (and warm if using Win-Ox™). Dip your piece directly into the oxidizer or apply with a brush. Optional: after rinsing and drying the metal, buff gently to create antiqued crevices and shiny high points. For safety and consistent results, antique your components before assembling, especially when creating items from mixed metals. Each metal reacts differently to each oxidizing solution, and some reactions involving multiple metals are hazardous or unpredictable. These bar and ring sets can be clasped with one hand making them ideal for bracelets and watches. Please note: The last few beads you put near the clasp should be small, to make sure the bar will go all the way through the ring (making the clasp easier to close). Size listed is outside diameter of the ring (excluding its loop) and the length of the bar. Price is per set, rather than per piece. Toggle Clasps and Bracelets It's true! Toggles can be clasped with one hand, so they are good for bracelets, including watch bracelets. Here's a hint to help make sure no one loses one of your creations: When using toggle clasps for bracelets, the bracelet must fit the customer fairly well. If the bracelet is too loose, a short toggle bar might wiggle itself out of its loop. Longer bars can help solve the problem, but won't eliminate it. To size your bracelets to your customers' wrists you might want to use a few chain links at the end, between the clasp and the last beads. Then you can remove or add links at the time of sale. Or if you really have a good thing going, make 6.5", 7", and 8" versions of your best-selling patterns and colors of bracelets. Pair these clasps with a relatively large loop or jump ring (at least 6mm) at the other end of the bracelet: The clasp hooks over this loop at the the opposite end of your jewelry, then you fold the hinge down to snap the clasp shut. These clasps work great for making bracelets and watches because they can be opened and closed with one hand. On vintage "assembly" bracelets (now called treasure bracelets), you'll often find a rhinestone bauble soft soldered or glued to the plated fold-over clasp. Fold-over clasps are still popular on the disk-and-loop bracelets used today, but instead of rhinestone assemblages, we normally see artisan-created polymer clay, dichroic cabs, or cool ceramic pieces glued to the disk bracelets.
