Brownish smoky quartz beads and briolettes are almost always cut from rock crystal quartz that has been heat-treated to produce this coveted color (ours included). Tones of smoky quartz range from yellowish to dep translucent brown. Good specimens of natural untreated smoky quartz do exist, but are difficult to find. Smoky quartz semiprecious beads are also known in the market as cairngorm, Colorado diamond, morion, radium diamond, and smoky citrine. In Sri Lanka, many quartz varieties are called "topaz," including smoky quartz (which is called smoky topaz). The dealers are usually not intending to mislead, but when they say "topaz" they simply mean quartz. Smoky quartz is believed to help ground oneself and remove negativity. It is said to enhance survival instincts, and help wearers reach personal and business goals. Some say smoky quartz is also good for dealing with hyperactivity and attention-deficit disorder. Chrysocolla is a hydrated copper phyllosilicate mineral, in shades of green, blue, blue-green, black and brown. It is commonly found in copper mines. Pure chrysocolla is soft and fragile. However, most chrysocolla beads are in a matrix of rock crystal (clear quartz) or silica, and has physical properties closer to that of quartz. When found in a brilliant blue state it can be mistaken for turquoise; typically, the brighter the blue or green color, the higher the price.Chrysocolla is also known as bisbeeite, chrysocole, crysocolla, chrysocolle, chrysocollite, chrysokolla, crisocola, crisocolla and gem silica. The name comes from the Greek chrysos, meaning "gold," and kolla, meaning "glue," due to its use as a flux to solder gold around 300 BC. The bluer shades of Chrysocolla are popular for the throat chakra, and are believed to promote clear communication and provide the courage to express oneself. The greener shades of Chrysocolla are popular for opening the heart chakra. The blue-green combination is believed to empower one to communicate in a clear, loving way.

Gold fill (also called gold overlay or gold-filled) is made by using heat and pressure to apply a layer of karat gold to a base of less costly metal. This produces a surface with karat gold. The minimum layer of karat gold must equal at least 1/20 of the total weight of the item. What's the Difference between Gold Plate and Gold Fill? Gold fill is 50 to 100,000 times thicker than normal gold plating, and 17 to 25,000 times thicker than heavy gold electroplate (sometimes stamped 14kt HGP). For more info about GF, see About Metals which includes an illustration of the difference between gold plate and gold fill. Also known as evening stone, lithia amethyst, and pink spodumene, kunzite offer a touch of pastels to our gemstone beads line. One of few naturally pink gemstones, this transparent stone is a pale-pink to lilac variety of the mineral spodumene. Similar in appearance to rose quartz and pink topaz, kunzite is strongly pleochroic, which means that its crystals display different colors when viewed by light polarized in different directions.
