Hat pins aren't just for decorating hats -- in previous generations, when more women had long hair and elaborate hats, hat pins were pinned into the hair-dos underneath the hat, to help hold the heavy hats properly into place. And of course, the better-known fact: women often kept their hat pins quite sharp, in case they were needed for stabbing the hands of "handsy gentlemen".

Many of our base-metal beads fit perfectly on our hat pins. However, to fit pearls on to them, you will need to use a bead reamer to enlarge the pearl hole.

Basic Loops The loop size will depend on how much wire you leave past the end of your beads, and around which part of your pliers you bend the loop. A good loop size is usually about 1/3 of the way from the tip of your pliers, with about 8mm of wire. Use round needle-nose pliers. For best control, experts recommend you break this step into a series of half wraps. Trim excess with flush cutters.
