  • Turquoise has been revered for thousands of years. Its name means "Turkish stone" in French, a reference to where Persian material passed on its way to Europe. Turquoise is considerably softer than quartz, and is usually treated for stability. Chinese turquoise is generally stabilized using either wax treatment, resin stabilization and/or dye to improve the naturally soft stone's wearability. Most of our Chinese turquoise beads are mined and processed in the Hubei Province of mainland China. The gemstone occurs naturally in shades ranging from sky blue to grey-green, with varying amounts of brown and black matrix, usually in locations where the soil contains high concentrations of copper. • Onyx is a striped, semiprecious variety of agate, with white, black, brown or red alternating bands. It is different from regular agate only in that the bands of which it is composed are parallel and regular. The name onyx originates from the Greek word onyx for "fingernail" or "hoof," probably because of its weak transparency or possibly its color. Onyx may chip or scratch rather easily, so store it carefully.Nearly all black onyx on the market has been rendered a uniform, permanent black color with a treatment using sugar and acid (and/or heat). This process has been used on the gemstone for thousands of years and is water safe.Onyx is one of the 12 stones mentioned in the Bible as adorning the breastplate of the high priests.Metaphysically, onyx is believed to help eliminate apathy, stress and neurological disorders, eliminate negative thinking, and sharpen the wits of the wearer. It is used to change habits, in addition to helping concentration levels and aiding absentmindedness. Some think it makes the wearer more eloquent, and thus it is worn for public speaking. The main sources of onyx are India and South America, but it is also found in China, Madagascar, Mexico and the U.S.A. • Amazonite (sometimes called Amazon stone) is a rare blue-green variety of microcline (a feldspar mineral) used as a semiprecious stone. Its brilliant color was once thought to be caused by copper, but now is attributed to the presence of lead or possibly iron. Amazonite is an opaque stone, often found with white, yellow or gray inclusions and a silky luster or silvery sheen. Even when polished, amazonite beads maintain a somewhat raw, natural texture that makes this pale blue-green stone even more appealing to many people. Brazilian Amazonite has lovely stripes and swirls of misty white layered into the blue-green base, giving it the look of wind-tossed sea spray or a rushing stream over rapids. • Cacoxenite by itself is an iron aluminium phosphate mineral associated with iron mining. It has a silky luster, and a hexagonal crystalline structure that grows in a radial pattern. When it forms within amethyst and other forms of quartz, it displays as yellow to reddish orange (and occasionally green) needles, strands, tufts and layered inclusions. The name comes from the Greek words for "bad" and "guest" because the phosphorus in cacoxenite causes problems when smelting iron ore. However, in the world of gemstone healing, it's highly valued: It is believed to raise spiritual awareness with cacoxenite's high vibration. When cacoxenite forms within purple amethyst, it is considered to be highly regenerative, and is associated with the third eye and crown chakras. When it forms within clear quartz, it is associated with the third chakra. In both forms, it is believed to be an amplifier for positive thought processes, and beneficial for increasing intuition. • Peridot gemstone beads are known by many names, including bastard emerald, chrysolite, evening emerald, hawaiite, night emerald, and peridote. These pretty green semiprecious beads are cut from an olivine variety composed of magnesium iron silicate. Peridot splits and bends the rays of light passing through it, giving it a velvety appearance and rich glow. Pronounced PEAR-ih-doh (or PEAR-ih-dot), its yellow-green color is mainly dependent on the amount of ferrous iron present. The traditional birthstone of August, peridot has been mined for over 4,000 years, and is mentioned in the Bible under the Hebrew name pitdah. It is said to have been Cleopatra's favorite gemstone. Avoid exposing peridot beads to acids, quick temperature changes, scratches, sharp blows, or home ultrasonic cleaners. Peridot is associated with the heart chakra. Many believe it to slow aging and help speech, as well as increase patience, confidence, and assertiveness. True to their name, these semiprecious beads offer naturally blue shades with inclusions that twinkle like stars in the tales of the Arabian Nights. One of only a few rocks used as a semiprecious gemstone, lapis lazuli contains grains of several blue minerals, including lazurite and sodalite. This opaque stone is distinctively fluorescent, and contains a matrix of calcite and speckles of pyrite. Lapis lazuli was one of the first gemstones to be used in jewelry. Lapis lazuli was one of the first gemstones ever to be worn as jewelry (a busy lapis trade is thought to have existed as early as 4000 B.C.). Natural rose quartz gets its color from iron and titanium impurities in the natural stone, however most rose quartz on the market (including ours) has likely been dyed to maintain a uniform color. Both forms are photosensitive and will fade in sunlight, so care for rose quartz beads accordingly. Often called the "love stone," rose quartz is said to open the heart chakra to all forms of love. This semiprecious gemstone is believed to encourage gentleness, forgiveness, compassion, kindness, tolerance, and self esteem. It is also said to remove fears, resentments, and anger. • Bumblebee Jasper is a warm mixture of yellows and grays, with some white and orange. Many of the beads on each strand are striped, and some are spotted, giving the effect of a fuzzy bumblebee with patches of pollen, weaving through the air from flower to flower. Jasper is a semiprecious chalcedony (or microcrystalline quartz). It derives its colorful patterns from other minerals present, and is often named according to its pattern. The Greek origin of the word jasper, iaspis, means "spotted stone." Jasper has a dull luster but takes a fine polish, and its hardness and other physical properties are those of quartz. Due to its earthy colors and microcrystalline quartz structure, Jasper is considered to be a nurturing stone. Gray jaspers are believed to bring serenity and unity, as well as filter distractions and increase motivation. If using jasper beads for chakras, choose a jasper that contains colors relevant to the chakras that are the target of your focus -- in this case, shades of yellow for the navel (solar plexus) chakra, for issues with self-esteem and personal power. With each purchase of bumblebee jasper, you're also helping power up the Pollinator Partnership!
