  • Dyed "Crazy Lace" Calcite is available in fantastic color options, for great prices. It is clearly a "reconstituted" or "block" type of gemstone, which means it is a mixture of resin, dyes, and potentially some gemstone content -- in this case, leftover/recycled calcite from other stone cutting projects. It seems durable and colorfast (it won't leak onto your customer's clothes), and we just loved the color selection so much that we couldn't pass it up. We encourage you to use it and love it too, just please don't try to pass off "block" gemstone beads like these, as natural or genuine gemstones. • Orthoceras is a genus of extinct nautiloid cephalopod. Their long slender shells varied in length from less than a centimeter to more than 14 feet! You may have seen stunning large carved panels, book ends or tables showcasing multiple Orthoceras ("straight-horn") shell fossils in rock shops, museums, or gem & mineral shows. What do you do with the smaller portions of these popular fossils after carving the museum-quality finds? Turn them into beads! The resulting beads don't show entire shells, but many of these black, gray, white and tan beads show interesting cross-sections of portions of the orthoceras structure. While these beads have a good hardness for jewelry, they should be protected from hard blows and acids. Fossils are believed to help one deal with change, and aid in transitions and transformation. They are also believed to activate the root chakra. See Related Products links below for similar items and additional jewelry-making supplies that are often used with this item. • Turquoise has been revered for thousands of years. Its name means "Turkish stone" in French, a reference to where Persian material passed on its way to Europe. Turquoise is considerably softer than quartz, and is usually treated for stability. Chinese turquoise is generally stabilized using either wax treatment, resin stabilization and/or dye to improve the naturally soft stone's wearability. Most of our Chinese turquoise beads are mined and processed in the Hubei Province of mainland China. The gemstone occurs naturally in shades ranging from sky blue to grey-green, with varying amounts of brown and black matrix, usually in locations where the soil contains high concentrations of copper. • Please see the Related Products links below for similar items, and more information about this stone. *Blue goldstone beads look like they've captured a clear midnight sky full of stars! As with all forms of goldstone, this manmade gemstone is created from glass combined with copper salts. Through a special cooling process, the copper salts in the navy blue glass transform into copper crystals creating the unique sparkle of these semiprecious beads and jewelry components. Regarded as a protection mineral, blue goldstone is considered a good deflector of unwanted energies. This synthetic gemstone is reported to have been first created when Italian monks were attempting alchemy (the creation of gold from base materials) - thus the name "goldstone." Blue goldstone components work great in a number of jewelry styles, including formal wear in which brighter colors of original goldstone might appear too showy.

  • Most of our fluorite beads (aka flourite, fluorospar, or blue john beads) display pretty swirls of mint green, white, clear, purple and lavender. This pretty pastel gemstone fluoresces in ultraviolet light, giving these beads a fun extra dimension! Since ancient Egypt and Pompeii, fluorite has been carved into artifacts, and it also has a long history of use as flux in creating metal alloys. In modern times, fluorite has gained a medical use in treating bones, teeth, and cell structures. The mineral's energy is purported to assist spiritual growth, clear the mind, and heighten mental achievement and concentration. To care for these semiprecious beads, keep in mind that fluorite is soft and easily scratched. Keep fluorite beads away from prolonged sun exposure, and never steam or ultrasonically clean them; warm soapy water is your safest bet. • Tigereye Beads come in richly chatoyant browns and yellows with a golden luster. While legends exist of Roman soldiers wearing this "all seeing" stone for protection in battle, tigereye was not considered a semiprecious gemstone until the late 19th century. Today, tigereye beads are some of our gemstone best sellers! The stone is also known as African cat's eye, crocidolite, and tiger's eye, and was once even called griqualandite, named after Griqualand West in Africa, where the finest examples of the stone were mined.Protect tigereye jewelry components from scratches, sharp blows, and large temperature changes. Because of their chatoyance, tigereye beads and pendants should not be cleaned with alcohol or abrasives. It can be helpful to treat the stone with oils like Goo Gone. • Sunstone beads consist of feldspar crystals that were formed in molten lava, then discharged onto the surface of the earth by volcanic eruptions. As the lava weathers away or is broken up, the crystals are released. This semiprecious gemstone is also known as aventurine orthoclase, heliolite, or aventurine feldspar, and it varies in color from golden to orange to red-brown. Sunstone beads can be transparent or translucent, and can provide metallic glints due to sparkling inclusions. These semiprecious beads are believed to strengthen life force, bring luck, instill optimism, and increase vitality. Sunstone is also thought to bring luck and romance to the wearer, and is believed to help liver and kidney health. Red and brown shades of Sunstone are believed to activate the root chakra, and gold and orange shades are identified with the sacral chakra. • Terra Agate: No gemstone is more creatively striped by nature than agate. This distinct and dramatically banded variety of chalcedony is composed of quartz layers, which varies greatly and can be of many colors. Each individual agate forms by filling a cavity in a host rock. As a result, agate is often found as a round nodule with concentric bands like the rings of a tree trunk. Terra Agate begins naturally like any other agate, and is then enhanced with a combination of heat treatment, permanent dye, sanding and laser etching, similar to Dzi-style agate beads. The combination of translucent and opaque agate swirls in shades of blue-green, with additional etched and fired patterns is beautiful! • Onyx is a striped, semiprecious variety of agate, with white, black, brown or red alternating bands. It is different from regular agate only in that the bands of which it is composed are parallel and regular. The name onyx originates from the Greek word onyx for "fingernail" or "hoof," probably because of its weak transparency or possibly its color. Onyx may chip or scratch rather easily, so store it carefully.Nearly all black onyx on the market has been rendered a uniform, permanent black color with a treatment using sugar and acid (and/or heat). This process has been used on the gemstone for thousands of years and is water safe.Onyx is one of the 12 stones mentioned in the Bible as adorning the breastplate of the high priests.Metaphysically, onyx is believed to help eliminate apathy, stress and neurological disorders, eliminate negative thinking, and sharpen the wits of the wearer. It is used to change habits, in addition to helping concentration levels and aiding absentmindedness. Some think it makes the wearer more eloquent, and thus it is worn for public speaking. The main sources of onyx are India and South America, but it is also found in China, Madagascar, Mexico and the U.S.A. Regarded as a protection mineral, blue goldstone is considered a good deflector of unwanted energies. This synthetic gemstone is reported to have been first created when Italian monks were attempting alchemy (the creation of gold from base materials) - thus the name "goldstone." Blue goldstone components work great in a number of jewelry styles, including formal wear in which brighter colors of goldstone might appear too showy.

• LabradoriteLabradorite beads and pendants offer striking rainbow-colored reflections when light hits them from a particular direction. The labradorescence, or schiller, in these semiprecious beads and pendants offers the same stunning visual effect created by gasoline on water, or light on the delicate wings of tropical butterflies. Also known as black moonstone, falcon's eye, and labordite, this semiprecious gemstone is a sodium-rich variety of plagioclase feldspar found in igneous or metamorphic rocks. It is in the same gemstone family as moonstone and spectrolite (a high-quality labradorite mined in Finland). Labradorite is believed to detoxify the body, slow the aging process, elevate consciousness, and protect a person's aura. Many say the stone heals mental confusion and indecision. Please see the Related Products links below for similar items, and more information about this stone.

  • Tourmaline is a complex crystalline silicate containing aluminum, boron and other elements. Its name derives from the Sinhalese (Sri Lankan) word tura mali, meaning "stone of mixed colors," and our mixed tourmaline strands can indeed contain blue (indicolite), yellow, pink to red (rubellite), black (schorl), green, dravite (brown) and clear (achroite). This semiprecious gemstone is piezoelectric (when it's heated, rubbed or pressurized the crystal gives it an electric charge). It is also pleochroic (looking darker from some angles than others). Protect tourmaline from scratches, sharp blows, and drastic temperature changes. Do not clean tourmaline in a home ultrasonic cleaner. Tourmaline has been used as a gemstone for over 2,000 years. It is one of October's birthstones, and is said to dispel fear, negativity, and grief. Many say tourmaline induces a tranquil sleep, calms nerves, regulates hormones, and fights genetic disorders. • Agate: No gemstone is more creatively striped by nature than agate. This distinct and dramatically banded variety of chalcedony is composed of quartz layers. This composition varies greatly and can be of many colors. The other chalcedony family, jasper, has less-regular patterns and is less defined than the agates. Another difference between the two is that agates tend to be translucent (or at least contain translucent bands), while jaspers are generally opaque. This distinction stems from agate being composed of microscopic "fibers" of crystalline quartz while jasper is made of microscopic "grains" of crystalline quartz. Each individual agate forms by filling a cavity in a host rock. As a result, agate is often found as a round nodule with concentric bands like the rings of a tree trunk. Agate is said to be named for the place it first was found — along the River Achates (now called the River Drillo) in Sicily. In ancient times, agate was highly valued as a talisman or amulet. It was said to quench thirst and protect from fever. Persian magicians used agate to divert storms. Some believed that agate would render the wearer invisible, and due to its strength and durability, it is used for making ornaments or for astrological purposes. Agate is a cooling stone and is said to cure insomnia, protect against danger, promote strength and healing, and ensure a healthy life. The major sources of agate are Australia, Canada, Mexico and the U.S.A. The gemstones of Minnesota (Lake Superior agate) and South Dakota (Fairburn agate) are agates.
