  • Using a center punch to mark a hole: Place the tip where you want the mark, then tap the top with a brass hammer or utility hammer. This leaves a visible dimple. (Don't use texturing hammers to hit metal tools.) Why use a center punch? If drilling, the dimple prevents your drill tip from dancing across the piece of metal. If using a hole punch, the dimple simply allows you to see a nice precise spot for the center of the hole. The 1/4" center punch can also be used for tube riveting. (Sharpie and other permanent markers work great.)Slide piece, dot side down, into the appropriate end of the tool.Look in hole on bottom of tool to center your dot.Turn screw clockwise, while holding your piece firmly to prevent scratches.When a tiny circle falls out of the bottom, you've punched your hole.Release by unscrewing until your punched piece falls off on its own - do not pull your punched piece off!Important: Step #6 helps prevent breakage. If you pull the punched piece off, you are likely to bend the post. Even a slight bend weakens it for future punches, and you could end up breaking it on something unexpected.Replacement parts are available: #69-235-RS.The set of replacement punches is delightfully inexpensive... If you are likely to punch things outside the recommended list, or you sometimes pull the punched piece off before it falls off on its own, we recommend you purchase replacement pieces in advance.   • For stamps that aren't pre-labeled (or the label wears off with use), place a dot with Wite-Out® or colorful fingernail polish to indicate the bottom of each letter (or symbol) to help keep your letters directionally correct when stamping. For the stamps that are pre-marked with the letter or symbol, marking should generally face toward the user when stamping. If you have a set that's different, you may want to put a dot facing you, to keep all your stamps consistent.
