Brass is an alloy of copper, zinc and occasionally small amounts of other metals (for improved machinability and corrosion resistance, generally for tools or other non-jewelry brass items). Our brass is typically 70% copper and 30% zinc, but may vary between 70% and 90% copper (with zinc as the remainder).
Raw brass is not as shiny as most plated finishes but can work well for matching gold plated metal. Raw brass can be made shinier by tumble-polishing with steel shot, water and burnishing compound in a tumbler. Or, to give raw brass an antiqued look, use an antiquing solution or patina. Similar to raw copper, raw brass will also develop a natural patina over time. Due to its high copper content, raw brass can even be etched, using Ferric Chloride!
