Brass is an alloy of copper, zinc and occasionally small amounts of other metals (for improved machinability and corrosion resistance, generally for tools or other non-jewelry brass items). Our brass is typically 70% copper and 30% zinc, but may vary between 70% and 90% copper (with zinc as the remainder).

Raw brass is not as shiny as most plated finishes but can work well for matching gold plated metal. Raw brass can be made shinier by tumble-polishing with steel shot, water and burnishing compound in a tumbler. Or, to give raw brass an antiqued look, use an antiquing solution or patina. Similar to raw copper, raw brass will also develop a natural patina over time. Due to its high copper content, raw brass can even be etched, using Ferric Chloride! • Raw Brass Blanks These blanks require finishing, which might include annealing; decorating (stamping, gluing, etc.); adding holes; filing, sanding, or hammering the edges; polishing and/or antiquing.Raw brass items sometimes have a thin coat of oil. Warm water and detergent (dry to avoid water spots) or alcohol and a cotton ball are all it takes to remove it. Since brass is a copper alloy, prolonged contact may discolor the skin of the wearer. Raw brass items will develop a natural patina over time unless sealed. To speed up the patina process, try applying an oxidizing solution such as Win-Ox (#86-343) or liver of sulfur (#86-354). • Inexpensive and fun! Most stamped charms are one-sided, thin, and either flat or slightly domed. Size given is height x width and includes loop. Most loops are 0.8-1.2mm (inner diameter). Raw brass is unplated, plain brass that has been stamped out from a brass sheet on a punch press. Items are "rinsed" in a sheet of dry sawdust to remove grease left behind from the press. Raw brass charms sometimes have a thin coat of oil, so be sure to wash them before gluing. Warm water and detergent (dry to avoid water spots) or alcohol and a cotton ball will do the trick. • These eyelets and the Crafted Findings riveting tools are designed to be used together. Crafted Findings tools are excellent, and can help you quickly achieve a clean look and very secure join in your riveted multi-layer metal jewelry or small mixed media projects. These eyelets can also be used without Crafted Findings' tools, with just a jewelry-sized ball pein or riveting hammer, and a few common tools. These eyelets are already cut to length, so they save you a lot of time over making your own eyelets from tubing. Not sure how to set eyelets, or which rivets and eyelets are best for your purposes? See Riveting 101 -- It explains just about everything you need to know, so you can get started making riveted metal or leather jewelry, or other small riveted artworks. What Length Eyelets to Order: The ideal Crafted Findings eyelet length is approximately 1.5mm (about 1/16") longer than the total thickness of the pieces you are riveting. If in doubt (textured metal, imprecise measurements, etc.), it's safest to use an eyelet that is a bit too long. Eyelet assortments are a great way to get started, then follow up by ordering specific lengths as needed. See the Crafted Findings Riveting Size Chart for size guidelines in both millimeters and inches.
